How much should we eat? Q/A by Ashish Lal

In our culture, we have often been advised to eat to our heart's content, but this notion is being challenged by the principles of yoga.

According to yoga, one should only consume 50% of their stomach's capacity. Out of the remaining 50%, 25% must be filled with air, while the remaining 25% with water, but not immediately; rather, after 40 minutes or an hour. By doing so, we learn how much to eat - 50% of our stomach's capacity. Overeating is a major factor contributing to obesity, even among those who consume home-cooked, healthy meals. By reducing portion sizes, the stomach shrinks, and one feels satiated with less food. The benefits of adopting this mindful eating approach are vast, leading to improved digestion, weight management, and overall well-being. Embracing this wisdom from yoga can help us develop a healthier relationship with food and pave the way for a more balanced and contented life.
