The only way to eat before a workout or the only way to eat after a workout will be tried to be proven by many people, and it has all been tried by me. Having protein shakes before the workout, a protein powder during the workout, sipping it, and protein powder after the workout have all been tried. Eating milk and oats before the workout because it gets digested slowly has also been tried. Not having anything for 18 hours before starting the workout has been tried as well, and that was also found to work for me. So, trust me, there is no fixed rule. Your body has to be listened to. If energy is needed to workout, a small banana, maybe a few dry fruits, can be had, and then the workout can be done. After working out, it is a good idea to have a full meal.
